On January 7th Dennis Ducklow presented at teh Sunshine Coast Camera Club about the use of Shutter speed in creative photography. His presentation was followed by a morning beachfront workshop that left the attending club members inspired. Here are are few of the images arising from Dennis’s presentation.
Shutter speed is often overlooked as a creative tool in our photography. We’re mostly familiar with freezing the action and showing motion but there are many other options along the continuum of shutter speeds that our cameras allow. This presentation will sharpen your awareness of the creative potential of shutter speed and leave you determined to try some new ideas. (Some of Dennis’ creative photos are attached.)
Dennis Ducklow, a professional photographer from Langley, is in constant pursuit of the creative edge. In addition to offering photography to businesses and families, Dennis teaches introductory and intermediate photography as well as 7-day creative photography workshops called Develop Your Creative Vision. He loves all aspects of photography and his current personal focus is expressive nature photography. You can view his most recent work on Instagram {doubleexposurephotog).
The Complexity of
Colour and The Lure of Luminance
My presentation is designed to appeal to all levels of photographic experience and expertise, including beholders of images relative to their perception and appreciation of photographs.
I will highlight why colour is the most “relative” of mediums… along with the complexities of how to interpret what your eyes and brain are telling you.
I hope to give you my take on why black and white photography
can sometimes be so compelling. Spoiler alert: it is not because B&W
is timeless or because some think it results in “Fine Art.”

On November 19th the Sunshine Coast Camera Club held a ‘Body of Work’ night where twelve members presented slide presentations of samples of their work. The evening was enlightening because of the diversity of the and quality of the images. Click here to see a sampling of the images. The club will likely host similar presentations again to allow all members who wish to participate to share their photographic style.
The October 15th SCCC meeting will be a member photo review. This means that each member may contribute three photos to the evening. Images will receive (hopefully) helpful feedback from club members. Open theme means that the image may be of any subject, however we are challenging photographers to demonstrate design elements discussed in the Design mini workshop provided during the September 3rd. meeting. The handout provided at the workshop can be viewed here.
The session focused on the use of shapes, lines, textures and perspective in creating an image. For example, the image of the mountains above shows perspective through the gradations of blue in the mountains, while the image below makes excellent use of rectangular shapes and textures in the three textured colour blocks.
Images for the photo review should be brought to the club meeting in jpeg format on a flash drive and should be of medium size in order to be viewed on the projector.
SCCC is happy to have Duane Sept presenting on macro photography at this evening’s October 1st session. Club meeting starts at 7, doors open at 6:30. Please contact us here is you wish more information.
On Saturday, September 21st Canadian Association for the Photographic Arts District Rep, Janet Slater, hosted a themed walk focusing on long exposures. Ten photographers attended and were assisted in mastering the art of long exposure images of waterfalls and other moving bodies of water. To see images of a few of the participants check out the gallery.
Thank you, Janet!
For those who might be interested in other Sunshine Coast Camera Club activities, the next club meeting is October 1st when Duane Sept will be presenting on Macro Photography. For information on meeting locations please contact us using the contact form.
Weather permitting, the Sunshine Coast representative of the Canadian Association of the Photographic Arts will be hosting a photo walk at Cliff Gilker Park on September 21, 2019 at 10 am. The theme for the event is long exposures and the representative will be there to offer tips and tricks, however photography of all kinds is encouraged. Bring your camera and tripod to the Cliff Gilker parking lot.
If you wish to attend, please contact Janet Slater at j.slater@telus.net. She will advise whether the walk is going ahead on Saturday morning.
The September 3rd session included a number of returning members and ten guests interested in the club. Three mini workshops were held on oil and water photography, photo design, and histograms. Overall attendees seemed pleased with the sessions with three guests becoming members at the meeting. For the handouts of the session, please check out the Member Resources page of the website and check out the Gallery page for more oil and water images.
